Class of 1984: 40 years on, a reunion full of memories...
Bergamotte, the crazy success of this start-up created by a KEDGE Alumnus!
A graduate of KEDGE BS, Romain Raffard is the co-founder and CEO of Bergamotte, the company that has reinvented ordering flowers via the internet
Romain Raffard received his diploma from KEDGE BS in Bordeaux in 2008. In 2015, he and his associate Loïc Reperant created the start-up Bergamotte, which specialises in the purchase, sale, and delivery of flowers on the internet.
The idea for this business arose out of a simple observation: at the time, flower delivery services on the internet were clearly not ideal, particularly in terms of quality, source, and the time it took to deliver them. “Most of the flower bouquets offered online were nothing to get excited about”, explained Romain. With Bergamotte, this entrepreneur wants to “re-establish the sex appeal of flowers”.

Based in Paris, this young company puts together floral arrangements daily, with flowers coming from France, Holland, and Andalucia. Delivery is a very important issue for the start-up. By outsourcing it, the delivery time is greatly reduced. Bouquets are delivered in 2 hours within Paris, and the next morning (before 1 pm) for locations in the rest of France. The Bergamotte team has also put in place a subscription system for receiving a new, original arrangement each week.
After capital-raising campaigns in 2016 and 2017, the Parisian start-up received 6.2 million euros from several investors, including Xange and 360 Capital Partners.
Instagram at the heart of our communications
Thanks to a strong social media identity, as well as associations with personalities, Bergamotte stands out. It has a very large community on social networks, especially on Instagram: 104,300 subscribers to date. Essentially, the company is effectively leveraging modern channels to attract new customers, especially young people.
"Instagram is at the core of our strategy," says Romain Raffard. "It’s our # 1 source of business - 40% of our website traffic comes from Instagram, which is higher than the traffic generated by Google and Facebook combined."
