Two Kedgers organised the Pure Ocean Cup for Biodiversity in Marseille!
Clément Pourtal and Amandine Deslandes (both KEDGE graduates) organised the very first edition of the Pure Ocean Cup for Biodiversity last September, a sailing regatta that combines science, sporting challenges, and protection of the ocean.
Pure Ocean's primary mission is to support state-of-the-art, applied research projects to increase knowledge about the ocean and to contribute to the fight against global warming while preserving marine biodiversity and protecting and restoring fragile marine ecosystems. In addition to funding research projects, Pure Ocean also promotes races and athletic challenges to raise public awareness of the critical state of our ocean.
On 8 September in Marseille, Pure Ocean held a unique regatta in its class in which companies took part in a race that combined science, a sports challenge, and the protection of the ocean.
Clément Pourtal from Pure Ocean and Amandine Deslandes from Marsail (a leading company in the nautical and sport-business industries), organised this special day. "We worked together on the format and programme of the event. Amandine managed the sports and event side, while Pure Ocean managed the scientific and business side", explained Clément.
Sports, a great vehicle for success stories, can be a real lever for the protection of the Ocean. - Clément Pourtal, Project Manager at Pure Ocean Fund.
The Pure Ocean Cup was held in parallel with the IUCN World Conservation Congress, which took place in Marseille from 3 to 11 September 2021. This regatta, which is meant to be both engaging and fun, was an opportunity to raise awareness and to mobilise companies to rally around the preservation of the ocean.
PURE OCEAN RACE FOR PURE OCEAN
A DAY FILLED WITH ACTION AND EMOTIONS ⛵
Starting with a conference on the challenges of marine research, the day continued with a number of discussions on the subject. After the conference 10 participating crews boarded identical boats and raced in the very heart of Marseille's harbour.
The day ended with an awards ceremony and speeches by prominent figures, including scientists, who spoke about the latest news from the Congress.
This first edition had several objectives:
- To raise awareness of the importance of protecting the ocean;
- To raise funds for the Pure Ocean Fund to finance marine research programmes;
- To give participants a sporting and fun challenge, as well as a chance to learn and share information in a social setting.
Using sport to achieve these objectives was a real success! Watch a short video giving the highlights of this exceptional day below.
A NEXT EDITION? 🌊
If you’d like to participate in the next edition, it will be held in Marseille on 21 September 2022. And more great news: Pure Ocean is organising the very first edition of the Pure Ocean Cup in Brittany to take place in May 2022!
Registration is now open! Contact Clément directly for more information.
Our aim is to make it an annual event in Marseille so that local companies can easily take part in activities promoting the protection of the ocean goals in a fun manner. We hope to have even more boats and companies taking part in the Pure Ocean Cup. - Clément Pourtal, Project Manager at Pure Ocean Fund.
