Firm Solutions was created by an ISLI Alumnus and helps companies with their Supply Chain strategy

After working at Soflog and the Hardis Group, Sélim Bouguessa (ISLI, 2013) decided to create his own company to support companies in their Supply Chain strategy.

Hello, Sélim. To start with, can you tell us about your educational background: what did you study at KEDGE and before attending KEDGE?

After completing my BAC, I obtained a DUT in Logistical and Transportation Management (GLT) at IUT in Châlon-sur-Saône, that is where my calling for logistics was born. The degree provided me with the basis I needed to learn about careers in the Supply Chain field. I then did everything I did to continue studying in the best Supply Chain programme. I received a DU in Logistical Operations Management (GOL) and a Professional Licence in Logistical Management (MLO) from IUT in Aix-en-Provence, for example. I obtained these degrees while doing a work-study programme with ID Logistique, they are both models in terms of operational supply chain programmes. After that, I wanted to deepen my conceptual knowledge about Supply Chain by doing a one year Master's programme in Sciences and Techniques of Logistical Engineering at the Université de Versailles, still as a work-study programme with ID Logistique. I finished my studies in 2013, after completing a second year "Supply Chain Manager"/ISLI master's programme, as a work-study with Hewlett Packard, at KEDGE Business School in Bordeaux.

How did your career start after you graduated?

After I obtained my ISLI degree at Kedge Business School, I started looking for a site manager in order to go back into the operational supply chain field and I was hired at SOFLOG. This job allowed to reconnect with my initial vocation for logistics and transportation. Additionally, I was able to apply the concepts I learned about Supply Chain during my last two years of study that were more focused on Supply Chain Engineering. I was able to experiment with developing activities, and even able to create a new company location using new work methods. Working in companies that were more and more connected and computerise; Supply Chain/ IS (Information Systems) was the logical next step in my career. That is why I joined HARDIS GROUP (a software firm) as Supply Chain Consultant in order to implement their WMS/TMS REFLEX with clients such as LVMH, CORA, Leroy Merlin, Galeries Lafayette, RATP… This job allowed me to develop my professional expertise. Each project took place with a different company and I considerably increased my knowledge of the sector, but also of processes and company culture. Additionally, I was able to fully understand the overall flux related to software publishing (improving products with R&D, structural organisation of a publisher...) and the IT industry (knowledge of connected and related jobs when working on an IS project). I really feel like I multiplied my experience two-fold because the richness and diversity of the projects I worked on enabled me to learn so much.

What are you doing today?

Through my academic and professional experience, I had the opportunity to work on different aspects of the Supply Chain (operational, strategic, and IS). I was able to deepen and master the missions and projects I worked on at my different jobs throughout my career (logistical and transport engineer, Supply Chain analyst, site manager, Supply Chain/IS Consultant). That is why, in 2017, I created FIRM SOLUTIONS; to offer a broad and adapted range of services to companies that carry out logistical and transportation activities. In order to provide a comprehensive offer, my firm focuses on four essential services: Training, Implementation, Reengineering, and Management. Indeed, I am convinced that these four services will enable companies of all sizes to implement even the most complex operational strategies. This new project is a real exciting challenge that will allow me to put into practice everything I have learned, both academically and professionally. It is very rewarding on the personal side as well.

What are your goals for the future?

My company was just launched and I am completely focused on its commercial development. My priority is to build my client portfolio by reaching out to my network, including the Kedge Alumni network, of course. I also have some medium term recruitment objectives to further develop the company. These are some real challenges that I will be working on.

How did your time at KEDGE Business School help you in your career?

Kedge Business School provided me with more than just an excellent education in Supply Chain, the teachings, pedagogical team, infrastructure, and my other classmates, also taught me to become one of the bests by giving my best and that being an entrepreneur is not only possible, but a logical next step in our path.

What is your advice to other alumni and students from the school?

Write your own personal and professional story, the major difficulties you have faced and will face will be erased by your motivation, determination, and results. Never lose site in your objective and trust yourself. I would be happy to meet with students hoping to become entrepreneurs and who are seeking more specific advice.
