Zoom on a responsible, ethical, Made in France leather goods brand launched by two Kedgers
Mehdi and Hugo, who graduated from KEDGE this year, have launched their own brand in the Upcycled and Made in France segment. To boost its development a crowdfunding campaign is open!
Hume Paris is a leather goods brand that makes products that are responsible, upcycled, and that are made in France. This company, formed in early 2021, is the result of the association of two friends who are concerned with the problems of overproduction and industrial waste. Hume Paris proves that it is possible to create excellent quality handmade leather goods in France, with leftover leather.
Did you know that when designing leather products, more than 40% of the skin is destined to be thrown away?
Who are the founders?
The two founders of Hume Paris, Hugo and Mehdi, conscious of the problem of wastage, wanted to create something new by "upcycling" discarded leather. They realised that creating a product can use resources that are already available and that are just as good.
"We want to encourage people to commit to the Made in France approach and to have confidence in the use of upcycled products," said Hugo Bettarel, Hume Paris' Co-FounderLes deux fondateurs de Hume Paris, Hugo et Mehdi, sensibles à la problématique du gaspillage, ont souhaité créer du neuf en « upcyclant » le cuir jeté. Ces derniers ont en effet constaté que la création d’un produit demandait des ressources déjà disponibles et tout aussi qualitatives.
An ethical brand
An average of more than 40% of skins are wasted during the fabrication of a leather-based product. According to an estimate by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the leather industry produces more than 800,000 tons of solid waste each year, which means that a significant amount of "scraps" are excluded from the production chain because they aren’t being used.
A Made in France approach
The leather scraps come from a saddlery in the south of France. First used to make high-quality French saddles, the remaining large scraps of leather are stored and put aside while awaiting their second life. Hugo and Mehdi select the best scraps and then deliver them to a workshop near Limoges where handcrafted cardholders are made.
The upcycling and the Made in France approach: A collective commitment
With values like these in mind, Hume Paris launched a crowdfunding campaign on the Ulule platform on Wednesday, 10 November, so that people who share these same values can invest in two models of cardholders that are both responsible and Made in France.
Because of the two Kedgers’ stand at the Made in France trade show in November, their conversation with Raphaëlle Duchemin on the "Nation Entreprenante" podcast, as well as their television appearance on "Fait en France" with Anthony Vitorino, Hume Paris raised 120% of its crowdfunding objective in less than 48 hours.
What’s next?
A new goal of 200% has been set to develop other ranges of products made from scrap leather.
