This Kedger has launched Silhouettes, a medium that specialises in the world of luxury goods!
Although still a student at KEDGE, Lola Durand has created Silhouettes - a particularly innovative medium that offers a detailed analysis of current events in the world of luxury via various formats.
INTERVIEW 💬
To begin, tell us about your educational background. What did you study, both before and at KEDGE?
After getting my economics and social sciences bac, I didn’t have any real career plans. So I wanted to do something as general as possible to give myself time to think about it. I attended an ECE preparatory class in Caen, Normandy for two years, then enrolled in KEDGE’s Grande Ecole Programme in Bordeaux. Ever since I was very little, I was attracted to the world of beauty products, and my taste for luxury goods has become refined over the years. After doing my first internship at Yves Rocher (between the two years of prep school), to do another one in cosmetics at the end of the third year of my undergraduate degree, but abroad this time. So I spent four months in Milan, Italy working for the dermo-cosmetic brand Uriage in operational marketing.
For my gap year internships, I wanted to find a position in the luxury goods sector. After countless interviews and multiple trips from Bordeaux to Paris, I finally got an internship in marketing and watchmaking development at Van Cleef & Arpels, followed by one in skincare at Chanel. Unfortunately, Covid-19 arrived and teleworking began. It was during these weeks of confinement that my desire to do work for myself in the field of luxury goods was born, and which finally pushed me to create a media company called "Silhouettes".
GRAND ECOLE PROGRAMME - KEDGE BUSINESS SCHOOL
What are you doing today? What gave you the idea and the desire to do what you’re doing today?
When I was looking for an internship in the luxury sector, I had a lot of interviews in which questions regarding current issues were asked. So I started writing mini-articles that summarised current events so I would be prepared as much as possible, as well as to improve my knowledge in the luxury goods sector. During the first lockdown, the idea of sharing these articles with other people started to form, and I started noticing that the hype around the luxury goods market, its events, and its launches, was increasing. My first entrepreneurial project was born on the first day the lockdown was lifted. "Silhouettes" is a medium that specialises in luxury personal care products (fashion, beauty & perfumery, jewellery & watches). It offers diversified content through daily news published on its various social networks, as well as more complete weekly articles on its website (business articles, sustainable commitments, new collections, etc). The aim is to offer professionals in the sector, enthusiasts, and simply the curious news that is quick to read, clear, complete, and relevant.

What are your development goals?
Today's luxury consumers want brands that are ethically, socially, and environmentally responsible. One of the main objectives of Silhouettes is to highlight committed brands in order to give them visibility and thus promote more sustainable and more responsible luxury products. I want the Silhouettes community to grow in France and abroad, and so I want to increase reach by launching Linkedin and Pinterest pages next. Finally, developing new formats is an essential element for its sustainability, so I’d like to publish a paper magazine in January 2022. One that takes a retrospective look at the year 2021, its significant news, its challenges, and its prospects for the next year.
If you were to give advice to any KEDGE graduate who wants to do something similar, what would it be?
If you’re passionate about a field, have a project in mind, and are tempted by the entrepreneurial adventure, then don't hesitate. Do it. Although the work will be long and a total investment on your part is required, while at KEDGE you have the chance to be supported, advised, and listened to. Your project will bring you a lot, and I’m sure that a great many people around you will be happy as well. Make sure you surround yourself with the right people; those who can help you move forward and challenge you to make you progress. Lots of people have ideas, but only a few dare to make them happen. So don't let yourself be intimidated, there’s room for everyone. And as Gabrielle Chanel used to say, "Take my ideas, I will have others".
The internships I did as part of my coursework at KEDGE helped me understand the luxury market, its challenges, and its prospects while making me want to learn more. By doing the marketing major for my Master 1, I was able to understand the different aspects and challenges of the field (brand content, SEO, design thinking), which now helps me every day. Also, the various discussions I had with the KEDGE Pro-Act coaches encouraged me to get started. The support I get from my coach is what makes me want to continue to develop Silhouettes by always throwing more challenges at myself.
Anything you’d like to add? A message to pass on?
