A week ago, the three Bordeaux creators of Wanted Community received $1 million from the US giant, Facebook. Among them, Christian Delachet, who studied at KEDGE in parallel with attending law school.
What is Wanted Community ?
If you live in one of the major French cities, you probably have someone among your Facebook friends who is one of the 850,000 members of the Wanted Community groups. Launched in 2011 by three Bordeaux friends, Wanted is a community of solidarity linked through several geographical Facebook groups. There’s only one motto on these pages: help each other. You can give or resell items, but you can also ask for advice, recommendations for places to go, or help with developing your projects. And it works! Every day, thousands of messages are posted on Wanted Community group pages and they receive as just many responses. Some calls for help received so much press coverage because they were full of common sense. For example, due to an incredible chain of solidarity between members of the community, this summer a homeless person in Bordeaux got a permanent contract as a cook in a restaurant in just a week.
Facebook gives them 1 million dollars
In February 2018, Facebook launched a 10-million-euro programme for funding inspirational community creators on its platform. The idea: to reward "those who have ideas with a high impact, a desire to serve their community, beliefs, convictions, and that are a force to bring people together in real life". Eight months later, the giant of Silicon Valley revealed the names of the 117 winners of its campaign. Among them, Wanted Community - the only European project to be receive this award!
Heads full of ideas
Although very happy and excited, the creators of these 82 groups want to keep their feet on the ground. As Christian (who graduated from KEDGE in 2011, the same year Wanted was created) explains: "Now it’s up to us to be savvy enough to be sustainable and to develop ourselves while respecting our values of mutual aid and solidarity". The three friends remain focused on developing the project, which has recently moved from the realm of the web to the real world by opening the first Wanted Café in Bordeaux.
The founders of Wanted Community open a café that is not like the othersFacebook has just given them a million dollars; however, for the creators of Wanted community, the important thing is sharing and helping each other.
